Oxford Bookworm Library
1. What is Oxford Bookworm Library?
Oxford Bookworm Library is a series of good English books published by Oxford University. The stories here are all world-famous works, rewritten in a method suitable for English learners with limited vocabulary. The Oxford Bookworm Library series can help you improve your reading comprehension and increase your vocabulary by guessing the meaning of words based on context (with vivid illustrations).
Reading is a very difficult skill to master. Reading English is even more difficult. Many people want to improve their English reading skills to a very high level but don’t know where to start. I don’t know anyone like me. At first, I also wanted to practice reading in English, so I played a few text books like: Wonder, The Hunger Game -Mockingjay,… and so on, but when I brought it home, I found it difficult to chew.
At first, I was very determined, thinking that if I wanted to achieve something big, I had to jump over a big rock. Only with effort would I succeed. However, don’t always try to jump in headfirst like that (You have to be smart!). We can absolutely take bricks and build them into stairs to jump over rocks easily, right?
That’s what reading skills are. Must practice. Must build firmly from the foundation, the foundation. Just build it and one day you will see it is strong enough. Basically the most difficult thing that makes reading English like a big rock is the language, or to put it more simply, POOR VOCABULARY. So where to start reading? How to accumulate vocabulary? Which book should I read first?
All the answers are in Oxford’s Bookworms Library.
2. What’s interesting in the super giant book set “Oxford Bookworm Library”?
As you know (everyone knows), Oxford is like the king of English teaching books. Oxford’s English books are very detailed and of extremely good quality with an extremely logical system suitable for all learners.
There are many series like Friend and Family, Incredible English, Get ready for,… or Oxford Dictionary books for all types of things like Phrasal Verbs, Idioms, Collocation, Academic Learning,… there are many.
Those are You-Know-What books to learn English. But few people know that Oxford also has a series of books to improve reading skills called “Oxford Bookworm Library”.
This set of books is no exception, still very detailed and the quality is beyond discussion. ?Oxford Bookworm Library? includes 7 sets, divided into different levels: Starter, Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, Stage 4, Stage 5 and Stage 6. At each level, the number of words you have to read is also the same. different. It gradually increases in difficulty from the Starter Set to the Stage 6 Set. Each set has audio files to practice listening.
Each level of Oxford Bookworms has different story genres such as jokes, science fiction, detective stories, ghost stories and Western literature to help learners improve their reading, listening and listening skills. vocabulary or intonation in sentences using stories with everyday contexts.
For example: In the Starter Set, you only need to read stories whose total number of words is 250 words. Meanwhile, in Stage 6 you have to read stories that include up to 2500 words. 10 times more than when you were just starting out, right?
What’s more special is that “Oxford Bookworm Library” provides stories with eye-catching and fun illustrations, making us not bored with studying, and also has accompanying exercises. Moreover, “Oxford Bookworm Library” also provides a good vocabulary list at the end of the book and detailed explanations of the meaning of each word.
To help everyone have a clearer picture of this set of books, I will summarize in more detail and review for everyone the first set of books in the “Oxford Bookworm Library”, the Starter Set.
3. What are the books in the Level 1 Starter Set like? Easy or difficult ??
Although the first set of books is called the Starter Set (the first set in the ?Oxford Bookworm Library?), it is not for that type of ?starter?. Starter here is for people who are starting to learn to read English, which does not mean the content will be “Hello. How are you?? Let you understand everything. But it will be different in the way the book is presented and the content.
? Regarding presentation, because you are new to reading books, the editor of “Oxford Bookworm Library” also understands this very well, so he designed comic books or illustrations for language learners. How thoughtful?
? In terms of content, these books mostly revolve around practical things that are easy to relate to and guess the meaning of, such as vocabulary about roads and so on. However, it’s not as easy as you think. If you know what roundabout is, it must be really easy for you. Just kidding! Learned a lot of vocabulary and expressions
This series includes the following books (you can easily find them online and buy them on Tiki or Fahasa at extremely affordable prices):
? Taxi of Terror by Phillip Burrows and Mark Foster
? Star Reporter by John Escott
? Sally’s Phone by Christine Lindop
? Police TV by Tim Vicary
? Mystery in London by Helen Brooke
? Red Roses by Christine Lindop
? Drive into Danger by Rosemary Border
To help everyone better understand the structure of a book arranged by Oxford, I will review the first book, which is “Taxi of Terror” by Phillip Burrows and Mark Foster.
4. Review of ?Taxi of Terror? by Phillip Burrows and Mark Foster
?Taxi of Terror? by P. Burrows and M. Foster is the first book in the Starter Series and is a PICTURE book. Is the work of artist P. Burrows and author M. Foster.
?Hello there.
For more years than I care to remember I have been writing stories with my illustrator friend, Phillip Burrows. Our creative process starts with caffeine, followed by biscuits, then sometimes chips. Several times we have been so amused with each other’s company we forgot to come up with any story ideas.
Even though we live many miles apart, we have an uncanny knack of knowing what each other is thinking. For instance, when iPhone 4 came out I knew Phil would want one ? and he knew I would too. How weird is that?
Our books mirror reality. Dogs finding lost people, robots robbing old ladies, cats getting lost in Pyramids, aliens abducting pilots… all those things that are part of our normal lives. Well, some people?s.?
? Mark Foster
The stories they compose often reflect the truth. The same goes for ?Taxi of Terror.? It is a very ordinary story with special communication situations: taxi terrorism. Stories can help you learn many words or phrases for daily communication and especially in emergencies.
?Taxi of Terror? tells the story of Jack. He received a new gift ? a mobile phone (a moblile phone) but ?How does it work?? (Even he himself doesn’t know). That night, he became a hostage in a taxi going through dark, deserted streets. He tried to use the phone for the first time. Can it save him in this situation?
At the end of the story, the vocabulary is listed completely and in detail, and the meaning is even explained next to it. Extremely easy to learn, understand and guess the meaning of words.
But if you want to be able to read English well, one book is not enough, you need to combine it with other books. Where do we need to find the books? Right up there! The mantra ?Oxford Bookworm Library?. Just a Starter series but there are already a dozen books to read. I challenge you to read the whole series! Just kidding. Try your best! Fighting!
